it was only a few months into that contract, in early 97, that vince went to bret and said, look, even this long drawn out 20 year contract (i think it was like 3 years as a full timer, 7 years as a part timer, and then 10 as a non wrestling talent), I can't pay you. Literally

If Shawn had permanently fucked off then t wouldnt have mattered so much because Vince could have kept Bret and lost Shawn + salary instead. But ultimately he banked on Shawn, forced Bret out, and screwed him on the way out
