why did WWF/E stop working with other companies anyways? WWF had Hogan working in Japan, Inoki and Vince were respectful to each other, etc. Why stop working in Japan and with smaller promotions in America? Now, I know they monopolized for 2 decades, but they could've had working relationships with Impact and Japan at least, right?

Because WWE can just buy out the talent they want, or straight up buy the whole promotion like they did with Evolve. Vince seems to be in the mindset that everything has to be WWE.

Thats the part I don't get. There aren't any downsides, it's not like the rare casual viewer sees your wrestler in XCG Wrestling in a bingo hall and immediately abandons WWE for it

Japan had a financial boom period during the 80's and early 90's. All the stuff you hear about China being the next big player was being said about Japan. WWF wanted to cash in on that, and they did to a degree.

WWF/E gets nothing out of working with other promotions since they are the top promotion, meanwhile it really helps smaller promotions, who are their competition. And while American/Japanese dream shows are fun, they don't accomplish much more. Wrestling in Japan isn't popular enough for an American promotion to justify running full-time there and Japanese stars have had limited impact in the US.

Things were fine until they dropped NJ and AJ for SWS and WCW got closer to NJPW. They got a little paranoid and then became top dog so they didn't need to work with others anymore.
There was Michinoku Pro and AAA but it wasn't the same league.
