So basically this thread? The only old timey wrestlers I would actually watch a match of is Ox Baker and Verne Gagne. All the southern smokey mountain cornette style wrestling is slow as you said and just plain boring. Who wants to watch two hairy old guys who can't wrestle for shit go at it in black and white? Promos sucked and were all the same. Old time wrestling is trash and I genuinely can't see how anyone likes it. Back then, before wrestling became more of an art and less of a carnival sideshow, sure it was good. Now, knowing full well what wrestling can be, it fucking blows.
It's like saying Pong and Trigger are great games. Sure, maybe back then but there isn't a single person on this planet who would rather play shitty 80's arcade games over Elden Ring for example.

This "Willy" guy had two sites about wrestling dating back to 2006 at the earliest, one of the was callex wwe-france dot com and the other, ecwfrenchtribute. On january 1st 2007 he fusioned the two to create willywrestlefest.fr. This website that, again has been running since the early 00s, is still up to date with current WWE. Some of the stuff this site has are PPV reviews. It covers a lot of promotions but just so you know, this guy has reviewed every WWE ppv since wrestlemania 85'
I'll keep digging further at the creation of this autistic madman but hopefully there's a frenchfag ITT so i don't have to trust the automatic translation

Might be too open of a question but does anyone have any recommendations for old AJPW matches? I just grabbed the full 1953-1995 archives torrent and I've just been picking around. Was hoping I could find Baba's retirement match but I guess there's just no good recording of that.

Awesome, I'll check it out. It doesn't necessarily have to be from Baba's time, but my ratio on XWT isn't super high and the AJPW archives were freeleech, so I figured I should start there. I really haven't seen a lot of puroresu because the few things I tried were modern NJPW and I find their style kind of boring. I heard AJPW did things differently though so I wanted to check them out.

I'm personally a fan of current NJPW so my opinions might not match yours entirely, but prime AJPW was undeniably one of the greatest eras of wrestling ever.

Someone told me once that my problem with NJPW might've just been that I didn't follow the feuds and just tried to watch the big matches. I tried watching a G1 tournament but I dunno a round robin tournament just seems like such a bad format for wrestling. I tried watching one of the big Kenny v Okada matches too and it was like an hour long and ended in a draw, which was really annoying to me.

I think overall I just don't really like the emphasis they place on the Wrestling As A Martial Art thing, I think there's too much like...no-selling shoulderblocks and arm drags and stuff, because it looks "technical." Someone told me old AJPW at least put a bigger emphasis on flashy moves and slams and stuff, which is way more my speed. Maybe I'm just a plebe.

I really just love stuff that looks like "wrestling," though, even if it's not a piledriver or a pumphandle or something really exotic. My favorite move in all of wrestling is probably Baba's coconut crusher, and I don't think I could even tell you why.

I could see that being the case, current NJPW is pretty influenced by the King's Road-style booking that entails long builds, lots of callbacks and in-ring storytelling that you might be missing out on if you just skip to the "blowoffs."

Interesting that you mention that, that's really a thing with the Inoki-era and not really as much with the recent stuff though. If you don't like the shoulderblocks'n'armdrags sandwich that usually comes with the early parts of NJPW matches you might not be huge on most Japanese wrestling, it's an instrumental part to their match structure a lot of the time. That being said you're correct about AJPW being a bit flashier and higher impact than their contemporaries.

Yeah, actually as I was typing that I kind of realized how concrete that kind of build up was. I've actually been playing a lot of an old Fire Pro game, and even my own matches have mostly just been tons of arm drags and simple throws because the game forces you to do those before you can land the big stuff.

Anyway, don't wanna make the thread about me. Thanks for the links, I'll check them all out. I'll try to give NJPW another shot sometime, they've gotten big enough that I'm assuming there're some ways to follow everything in English now.

Even though the older classics are longer, they focus so much on ring psychology that the viewer is interested in just about every second of it, whereas many modern matches focus so much on highspots, the time in between those highspots are kind of boring and makes the matches feel much longer than they actually are. I remember watching that long Giant Baba vs The Destroyer match once, and it felt shorter than the average 15-minute TV match.

Unless I'm wrong, Ric Flair only fought 9 matches with NJPW, and four of them were in the 1995 G1 Climax tournament. You could start looking there. I can't really tell who that is, though.

Dory got over being the straight-up technician and one of the best technical wrestlers at that. He may have not had Terry's sheer charisma but if being a good technician is all it takes to connect with a crowd and reach the levels of success Dory did then the career of guys like Bill robinson would've been much different

You know what i'd like? A simulatiob videogame set in the territory days where you could run your own promotion in the alliance, break rogue and try to go national, run an outlaw as competition, carnying a promoter and stealing the promotion from him.
