WWF was goofy cartoony shit. WCW had better wrestling, the Cruiserweight division alone was more entertaining than anything that was going on in that shit show. WCW felt more like an epic sporting event, while WWF felt like some cross between a bad Jerry Springer episode and a soap opera.

The darkness and color schemes combined with the more hardcore nature of the wrestlers were what made people start watching WWF again. Ironically, it was WCW that started to look like a children's show with all the bright colors and lights, so it became lame to watch that while Austin was flipping people off and everyone was bleeding on the other channel.

It had shit lighting and video quality, period. That's why they changed it to look more like WCW by late 2000-2001. When they got to the Ruthless Agression era it basically looked like WCW Nitro in terms of presentation. Nobody was attracted to the aesthetics of the product, just the edginess, which brought in more "edgy" kids and teenagers. Match quality was shit, presentation was shit, storylines were atrocious, but it had cursing and people flipping the bird so it became the cool show to watch for the kids.

That wasn't the main draw. It was like icing on the cake. They were all basically low carders who would always get squashed by the bigger guys, but they put on entertaining rtaing matches during the early hour of the show. WCW during it's peak just felt "stacked", it had everything for every taste. It looked bigger and more important than WWF, and had a more international feel, and did more cross-promotions with Japan, Mexico, Europe, etc. Like I said it was like a sporting event, something you had to watch every Monday night, while WWF had a more rustic vibe specially during 96 and early 97.

This isn't how "epic sporting events" go, and if you think it is that's only because modern NFL, NBA, etc tries to hype up storylines and good guys and bad guys to drum up interest. Basically it is real sports that tries to copy wrestling, not the other way around.

WrestleMania 13 he turned face, but the WWF main event scene was in transition with several claimants to the top spot (Bret, HBK, Sid, Taker, and Austin). This was similar to the period earlier in WWF through 1992 and until Mania of 1993, after Hogan vacated the WWF title in December 1991, eventually settling on Yoko who was built as an unstoppable monster for a year until Bret claimed the belt and became the guy for the next few years. Austin became the guy by beating HBK for the WWF title at WM 14.

1998 was Austin's white hot year, where he was the most over of any wrestler of all time, and in which he was the undisputed face of the promotion.
