Due to the fact that Gage was super jealous that GCW was working with Cardona for a long term deal complete with Cardona finding them sponsorships and working to hook the company up with money marks, which he was making good on in terms of the Pabst Blue Ribbon sponsorship deal and securing funding for GCW from friends of his that had cash to waste funding a wrestling fed.
To prevent that from happening, GCW worked out a deal with Matt Cardona to get him to drop the belt to Jon Moxley, since Moxley was the only guy GCW could trust not to take Nick Gage up on his offer to pay someone to do something horrific to Matt. SUPPOSEDLY Matt agreed, in exchange for Moxley telling Matt that if he did GCW this favor, that Tony Khan would bring him back to AEW for a feud with Cody Rhodes. Matt agreed, dropped the belt, but then got fucked over by Cody leaving so the feud/return to AEW never happening since his return was conditional on said Cody feud.
