What you think is just braindead apathy is Japanese stoicism which made him very over with the Japs, especially the ladies. Misawa (before he got fat) was super popular with the fujos and was considered very handsome.
Westerners seem to connect more with Kobashi and Kawada (Kobashi is my guy personally) but if you're saying Misawa didn't connect with the audience you're just wrong. There's a reason NOAH had a green color scheme from the start.
