Psycho Circus was 1998. KISS was still a pretty big band in 2000 but the Metallica x Sting collab was a much, much bigger get for the company. Also back in 1999 or so, Master P and the No Limit Soldiers were in a feud with the West Texas Rednecks. It's not like KISS was the only group Eric was aware of. he went with what was popular and trendy at the time.

If anything, Metallica became even more popular when they started doing the hard rock/heavy metal albums instead of thrash. The Black Album sold twice the number of Justice, mainly because they were still in a spot in which they were still 'heavy' enough for most metalheads and also were radio friendly to people outside of metal

He didn't luck into it, he conned his way into it. He happened to be friends with Jason Hervey, who was friends with TV execs. Hervey asked them to write letters recommending Bischoff, which were full of outright lies about Bischoff running AWA's TV for years (he didn't).
