People started to fight one another in the crowds at some point over the signs and WWE began vetting signs at the door and taking them away. Eventually it just became less common because WWE would just take their shit away ultimately for arbitrary reasons.

This, WWE basically killed it for most people cause they wanted to approve any sign that might appear on tv and ripped up the ones they didn't like, eventually people just moved on, and we got endless chanting instead
