Because that's the end of the storyline? If you had been paying attention, you would see that all the matches and stuff that was booked around Wardlow was to show pretty clearly that MJF had no chance against Wardlow at all. AT ALL. The only way this was gonna have a satisfactory ending was with a squash. Giving MJF offense would mean his cowardice at facing Wardlow was misplaced since he could deal with him just fine. Instead, if Wardlow squashes him, then the story makes sense. MJF had a reason to put Wardlow through all that he'll, because he's way above MJF and he knows it.

If this isn't a work than MJF is an idiot who is tanking his value. He's showing himself to want out of AEW and is potentially hard to work with. Which means WWE can just low ball him an offer and tell him to take it or leave it. Since WWE won't offer him a lot of money, AEW wouldn't have to offer much either. So instead of just letting his contract play out and getting a huge pay raise either from AEW or WWE in a bidding war, he's just gonna end up with scraps.
