Despy isn't being built up to win. He's being built up to be the perfect foil for Hiromu Takahashi being a record breaker. Hiromu getting a record 4 wins going over Jushin Liger's and Koji Kanemoto's 3 AND getting a record 3 wins in a row going over Tiger Mask IV's 2 wins in a row is too good to pass up.

I didn't watch but I checked the final standings, it's another lame rematch. I like Desperado and I'm sure he's going to win but come on
They could have done something interesting with Eagles, Yuta, Austin, Phantasmo, Zayne, Lindaman, etc reaching the finals but of course they go back to the same shit as always

He had kinda done everything he can do in the Junior division and he was obviously never gonna go Heavyweight. He was also being phased out as a top guy. He would have probably been, like, slightly above BUSHI tier by now if he stayed.
He got a shot, no matter how minuscule, at being a big WWE superstar, and now that he's coming back to New Japan, I wouldn't be surprised if he's treated as a bigger deal than he stayed. Not just because he was technically in WWE, but because absence makes the heart grow fonder.

This is even assuming New Japan want him back at all, that is. I don't know.
