What's wrong with it? You open lots of cool booking doors by having it be the standard. If they're gonna be out for longer, you can vacate. Or hell, if they are out for longer, the interim champ can declare himself the real champ. And let's not forget, you can always have the interim guy win. (Probably not happening here though)
