You now remember that brief period of time when AEW ran specials with WCW names that Cody had the rights to until Cody gave WWE the rights to those names in exchange for the trademark to "Cody Rhodes"... Which didn't really matter in the end because he went back to WWE.

what I assume is Cody most likely just wanted to do his own thing in AEW while still being a focal point.
But over time, TK kept taking away power from people and was booking more by himself. So yea, he probably was already thinking about leaving a long time ago.
