I was an e-fed fag then and it made me appreciate the idea that the guy with the most words would win the match. HHH's 20 minute show opening promos were like a symphony to me. And the way he'd shut down everyone's favorite the Rock? Magnifique!
So for a time, I'd watch the first hour of Nitro and flip back and forth between that and Raw. WWF was so filler heavy that you were bound to see a match on WCW when they were trotting out bullshit. But one week, while a match was going on in WCW, HHH opened the show with one of his soliloquy-esque promos and it dawned on me that I would rather hear him talk than to see actual wrestling. I cared so little about what WCW was doing opposite talking that I decided I must not give a shit about WCW and went to just WWE. It helped to be WWE exclusive when they had already acquired all of the guys I liked in WCW and ECW by then.
