That's today, and this shit was way worse five years ago.
It was never so much that people hated NJPW itself, it's that NJPW "fans" were the most obnoxious in the fandom and it wasn't close. Twitter faggots entering every thread and shitting on whatever it was you were talking about and shilling for Naito or Ishii or Omega or whomever. It's not a coincidence that AEW's fanbase has the exact same reputation now.
That's been lingering for years, sort of dormant due to his irrelevant NJPW has been. They've been really good this year, and Japanese wrestling as a whole has been on the up, so more people have been watching or at least paying attention to NJPW. Then comes Forbidden Door, and really all eyes are on NJPW again. Then the card starts getting announced, hype drops, AEW's viewership tanks, derision rises, and then some MMA event nobody heard of gets 3x the attendance of a two night Wrestle Kingdom, NJPW reacquires their reputation as a laughing stock.
It's a shame because NJPW has been really good this year and the G1 is going to kick ass, but yeah, that's why they're getting shit on. Don't think I missed anything.
