The first reasonably big person to jump from AEW to WWE was going to be a megastar, no matter who it was. Vince was always going to push them to the roof, and it happened to be Cody because (when he did have the book) he booked himself out of the top belt and REFUSES to break that stip because he thinks they shouldn't be broken.
The only thing Cody would have stayed for is if he got his hands on the book again, and for more than just his own segments. He's a mark for his Daddy's legacy and there were 2 things he could do, become a booker, or win the big one Daddy never did. Only one of those options was ever open.
