Undertaker was the real big star in WWE's eyes when they were pushing John Cena, but John just happened to be younger. Undertaker got significantly more popular than Cena, but Cena's fanbase was younger. This is also why WWE did their best to keep Cena and Taker seperated in the main events, because the few times they shared screen time together, Undertaker got massive pops while Cena got booed out of the building.
