His only function in the match was to eat the pin. You could see that 100 miles away. Okada/White/Page is the match people want. No one cares about Cole, but it would have gone down that the title couldn't go to an AEW guy, and Tony wouldn't want Adam taking the L. So you have to put some fall guy in there.
