Santino was the most popular guy on plenty of WWE shows,
Grado was so popular that the indy he worked for got a reality TV show on terrestrial TV in bongland and then grew into the biggest promotion in Europe until Grado signed to TNA. And Based Grado stayed in character during that show to an insane degree and it's worth watching him work the entire documentary crew.

The problem Orange faces is that his whole character is the joke, so he can't transition out of it easily or at all. The comedy guys who get over as top guys are guys who switch in and out of it, but it's his entire identity as a character.
