Like wrestling, there is too much UFC for people to stand out as much anymore. Back in the day, you could easily watch every show and know all the guys. Now there's a show every week, if not two shows. UFC is still doing great though do I doubt they care.

It has been established as a mainstream-sport and has lost it's original edge, but it's far from dead. The "problem" is that it's mostly clean-cut athletes without any cool gimmick or character doing the fighting and not the larger than life tough guys, weirdos or psychos of early MMA. Early UFC had people like Kimo, Pride had roided up freaks or unhinged maniacs like Wanderlei or Crazy Horse, even mid 00s UFC had crazy people like Chris Leben or showmen like Anderson Silva. UFC is kinda lacking in that department nowadays, with some exceptions

Connor's mostly gone, lsrael was a dud, Mengsvidal KWABed himself, and l can't think of anyone with mainstream appeal ready to step up.
MMA died when it stopped being focused on mentally ill tough guys and started recruiting dimeless, charisma-vacuum "athletes".

Also, There's a lack of real stars right now. They desperately need for some guys to get over because the current crop of top guys are boring as shit, and the entertaining guys just aren't good enough to crack that upper echelon.

The pay is god awful, and at today's level you need to be an elite athlete. The problem is any elite athlete is better off doing literally any other sport. Hell, even if you're a personal trainer you're still better off than trying to join the UFC.

They do not pay enough to build new stars, the old guard that just loved a particular martial art or did it as a passion are long gone. The sport will slowly decline in popularity until it's on for free on the same channel as stock car races.

At least Dana got his money though, he doesn't give a fuck. He's just there to milk it.

They've done a lot of things that won't interest casuals:

- Getting on ESPN+ was a mistake for growth. It's similar with boxing on Showtime/DAZN. Casual fans are just not going to buy services and channels to see people they aren't really familiar with.

- There's no real big stars now.

- They have way too many foreigners. People just aren't going to connect as easily with fighters from Albania like they are people from their city, who doesn't speak their language.

- I do not think the women are draws for casual people except for situations like Rhonda Rousey.

- They added too many divisions which makes it hard to keep track of

And in general, UFC has just never been as good as promoting MMA like Pride was. They've always pushed it as more of a sport thing instead of a wrestling style of promotion with larger than life characters, which is more for hardcore fans.

I also do think MMA kind of has cycles where people care and don't care like wrestling since it is year-round.

As a lifelong MMA who is went back into wrestling (AEW) in 2020 after a eleven year hiatus, the UFC has really diluted the product, every card has a new debut from Dana White's Contender Series or some guy who would not have been in the UFC in the early 2010's, it has also gotten a lot harder to care about fighters as the roster has exploded from more than 800 fighters, it's very hard to keep track of especially when the guys have to dress as athletes, no different entrances etc.

It's never been bigger though

The women aren't draws for the same reason the lighter weight classes aren't draws.

The too many divisions is also true. This goes back to the lighter weight classes, most of the rest of the world aren't very big. No casual has a shot at naming the 125 and 135 champs, nor do they care.

I got into it slightly before UFC 100. I literally don't care about it anymore. Izzy is a boring fighter that tries to hype himself to the moon. The sport is declining, unless another promotion overtakes the UFC that allows sponsorships during fight week and the fight, and paying them more, it's over.

It'll take some time, we're already seeing some signs of the development declining. Within 10 years it'll decline. The only hope is them selling it again, Dana leaving, and someone restoring it. Basically, they need someone to do what Dana previously did. Whoever that is though will probably just milk it again when it's popular again.

to me UFC's biggest problem over the last 10 years or so is the size of their roster. they always have 500+ fighters on contract and a lot of them sign the mark contract just to fight one time a year. and the covid era exposed them. They have ALL those fighter on contract and had to sign even more indy shitters just to get a full card and it brought the quality way down. i have a hard time watching ufc now.
