He spent a year filtering them as a babyface and when you're less popular than shitters like Keith Lee and Eddie Kingston, it's time to turn. In terms of popularity, he was never going to be at the level of Phil, Moxley, Danielson, et al. He just doesn't have the indie/Jap cred, so they may as well lean into that and make him a despicable heel. The funny thing about smarks is that with this new character, he'll eventually get face reactions again and turn into a harder-edged face.
