This summer, NJPW presents the 32nd annual G1 Climax tournament. The winner of the G1 Climax wins a contract for an IWGP World Heavyweight Championship match at next year's Wrestle Kingdom. It is possible for the winner of the tournament to lose their contract, as anyone whom they lost to during the round robin stage can challenge for the title shot as if it were a Championship.

The G1 Climax 31 will be held over twenty events, from July 16 until the Final on August 18. Twenty eight participants, divided into four blocks of seven, will compete against everyone else in their block. The G1 Climax functions on a point system in which the winner of a match gains 2 points, a draw will give both wrestlers 1 point, and losing rewards 0 points. The most dominant wrestlers of their blocks will fight in two semifinals, with the winners competing in the Final.
