You miss out on the context. He was fine his first year, then, he started having his wife appear on more. Brandi is worse than Stephanie ever was as an on-screen character. Then, you have weird promos, announcements and him getting his win back. Plus, his material dries up really quickly. He's going to cut like thousands of "MY DEAD DAD" promos, just you wait and see.

And as for his end. Imagine if 99' Kurt Angle was played up like he came in, but no twist-- we're meant to cheer for him. He'd be out of wrestling in like six months. That's the issue. Cody is such a self-aggrandizing person that it's really hard to cheer for that kind of guy. Shit, someone mentioned Bo and he's another good example. Bo was a "face" but really a heel because he was annoying as shit and clearly worse than the people he was beating. Cody, was doing all that but still wanted to be a face.

1. He's a "big" outside name coming to WWE. That's it. WWE hasn't had that in decades, really.

Cody literally has the same exact presentation that he did in AEW. The difference is is that the AEW fanbase got tired of his act when he started trying way too hard to appear like a good guy. He came off as disingenuous after a while, so he started appearing more similarly to Bo Dallas rather than Dusty.

My point is that the hype around Cody, while being legit, is purely based on the (great, good MOTY candidate) HIAC performance, not on Cody's gimmick.
The American Nightmare was unbelievably tedious in AEW and nothing changed since he came back to WWE. He used to have weigh-ins before a wrestling match or to put himself on fire in AEW, now he wrestles with his pecs destroyed in WWE.
Cody's a great wrestler, but there's a thin line that separates looking like a Natural badass from looking forced and stupid and he crossed that line too many times in AEW just because he didn't want to give the fans what they wanted.

His promos and character were presented differently when he returned to WWE (not as cringe) and he has been booked coherently. Booking is part of presentation fyi and it's hard to deny that his recent booking has been anything but good, compared to the AEW run at least.

The only thing that remains the same is his appearance and wrestling ability, even the gimmick has seen an improvement.
