I think he saw Jericho come in and realized he could be replaced. Mania 2000 had many changes. Originally, it was Austin vs Beeg on top, but Austin was hurt. Then the idea was a triple-threat but they added Jericho to make it a four-way because Jericho was getting over. HHH flipped and started burying him in meetings and saying he was working aggressive with Chyna (his gf), and got him out of the match.
Stephanie also played a part. Stephanie and Jericho, just like Stephanie and Angle, had better chemistry than him and Stephanie on-screen. He beat Jericho that summer, but then nixed the Angle ...angle, because he didn't think Stephanie should leave a guy like him for Kurt.
Anyway, come 2001, HHH gets hurt and Jericho gets a big push to replace him. HHH was supposed to turn on Austin at this point. (Judgement Day 2001, they pretty much told you that HHH won the fucking match for Austin). Jericho gets the push instead and has the blessing of Rock and Austin who both want to put him over for most of that Fall. It culminates with Vengeance which was a mess because HHH said it'd be weird for Jericho to win clean (Austin actually wanted to do the job). Then HHH came back the next month and made sure Jericho would never sniff the top card again. From 2002-2005 Jericho kind of meandered around the midcard despite always getting a good pop and the WWE in desperate need for a new face. They turned Jericho, afterwards so he could be heel 2, to HHH, who was never giving his top spot.
And this is why HHH is a cunt.
