The real answer is that booking a stadium is actually not that much more expensive than booking an arena. They could have filled an arena and sold 20,000 tickets, or fill half a stadium and sell 45,000. They’ll make way more money with the second option. It’s a Nick Khan idea and I guess it makes sense. The stadium being half empty looks bad, but the people watching on Tv don’t see that

They picked the latter. Idk which is better, but I get why they’d pick the option that makes them the most money. Booking that stadium is maybe 20% more expensive, and they make twice as much on ticket sales.

From a marketing perspective, they can make it feel more important to fans with exclusivity. From a stockholder perspective, sell more tickets. They're damned if they do and damned if they don't. They please the market by selling tickets but also prove themselves to be a shell of their former selves by tarping off half the seats, or they are perceived as leaving money on the table and spook investors while potentially generating more interest in the product with an apparently more loud rowdy crowd.
