So was the attendance divided up equally between the three promotions or added the total attendance to all 3? Doing the latter will inflate DDT and TJPW's numbers significantly

Does it take into account where the buildings are etc? And have percentage attendances? No idea why anyone would care anyway except to console war. It matters to people running the companies but absolutely nobody else.
BJW running 17 shows is wild, I thought they were on the verge of shutting down.

Because they are rich and famous company. They are wwe japan. They advertise aggressively, more sonsince bushiroad bought them (which is also why stardom is blowing up). They have most of the market share, still largely riding off of Inoki's legacy and the traditions he created.

Bushiroad has such a boner for Stardom that they've pushed a lot of ad space into promoting them alongside their idol endeavors
They would need to devote a similar amount of money to shoving them down people's throats

New Japan's always been the top promotion. Only time that was really threatened is AJPW at certain points under Baba but Baba always played on the safe side with venues.

Dragongate did the mistake that a lot of companes seem to be doing with their biggest show of the years recently.
Had a great lineup for a ppv and decided to make it a 2 night event with only the main event being announced for night 2 until the end of night 1.

BJW was always behind NJPW, AJPW, DG and NOAH. They do hardcore wrestling, which is a niche thing, but it's their niche and it helps them draw. If they got rid of it, they'd be in the same position and lose the deathmatch fans. Maybe eventually they would be able to build up a bigger audience, but that's a gamble. They got hit hard by covid and they now have to compete with Freedoms, which has been taking their talent. They also have problems as their deathmatch guys were around the same age and now are all old together. So they can't do as much and they are overexposed. And of course, they have a small budget because they don't draw that big so their recruiting is limited and their roster is limited.

BJW kind of has to be a full time promotion. Because if they aren't, they will probably lose their bigger names like Sekimoto, Okabayashi, Nomura and Abe. Clearly though, a lot of their guys aren't finding being a full-time wrestlers for them worthwhile though.

BJW is a good promotion, but people stopped ripping it online, so the IWC doesn't get to see it.They put on some pretty good house shows and anything with the four above I mentioned plus Kosuke Sato and Nakanoue is usually good. I legitimately find their house shows and DDT's to be the best in Japan, but nobody sees it.

All Japan stuck mostly to Tokyo, didn't do big interpromotional events from big stars from other companies, didn't do as much PR/sponsorship work and didn't run big Dome shows like NJPW did which kept them at #2. They also just didn't produce rookies at the level NJPW has been able to consistently do.

When the NOAH split off, a lot of AJPW fans stayed loyal. NOAH also made a bunch of mistakes by relying too much on the older guys and not producing new rookies. I also don't find their style that interesting, since it's mostly older guys doing 15 minute multi-man tags that don't mean much with not a lot of angles.

Dragon Gate is a niche promotion more aimed towards women. I talked about BJW above. DDT is also kind of a niche promotion with the comedy, but really does have a lot of good shows and talent and is far more serious than it used to be. AJPW has lost half their roster twice (once to NOAH, then to Wrestle-1) and has had a bunch of backstage problems, lost their national tv slots they had in the 80's and 90's, lost a bunch of guys over the last year and hasn't been producing enough talent.

I can only speak for Dragon Gate. But they have their house shows, where nothing happens. And ther PPVs and Korakuen Hall shows, where stuff happens. They then have a tv show on Gaora that broadcasts the important shows in edited/clip format

Thanks to the DM wrestlers being at the tail end of their careers, BJW shows are 90%-ish "regular wrestling" shows, with DMs being reduced to at least one per house show (2 or 3 at best for big enough shows) and following the tried and true motif of a tag or trios barbed wire boards deathmatch.
The problem of them not being ripped is likely a combination of the absolute wilderness that is catching a show live since they can be on nico or LINE and the absolute ignorance on BJW Core, which has most of, if not, all shows from recent time for just 888 yen.

I'm a little out of date since I just watch stuff off of VOD services and streams. Before, everything we would get would come from TV.

Japan is a walk-up business country. People buy tickets the day of the show and often cards are not announced way ahead of time. They don't have cable, just satellite and at least in my experiences, it's more of a niche thing that people in the big cities don't bother with as much. There's not as many big TV contracts like it is here in the US and the country is smaller anyway.

The two TV stations mentioned here are Samurai TV and Gaora. Samurai TV is a niche channel you can get through Satellite that shows nothing but fighting sports and wrestling. GAORA is more of a regular channel that airs Dragon Gate and Oz Academy. WWE also used to air on J-Sports/ESPN and at one time, had more shows on than anyone else, but I'm not sure of the situation currently.

NJPW has a weekly show on national free tv, but it's on at a bad time and isn't very long. They also have NJPW World and air on Samurai TV.

Stardom also has weekly national free tv which helped them immensely. They have Stardom World and air on Samurai TV

DG has changed tv situations a lot, but I think I heard that they have some kind of national tv, and they air on GAORA and their Vod service.

DDT/NOAH/TJPW airs on Samurai and Wrestle Universe.

AJPW has their own streaming service and airs on Samurai TV as well.

BJW also has their own streaming service and airs on Samurai TV, a few times a year.

Samurai TV used to be a bigger deal, but it seems like they have less programming now with everyone going to VOD and there's just a lot of competition between promotions.

Yeah, the storylines progress through live shows and press conferences/post match interviews, but no-one in the west speaks Japanese and that whole concept was lost on a lot of people. DG in particular does a ton of talking. I think they also do some work through the weekly wrestling magazines and social media, but again, nobody speaks Japanese. The storylines are usually also more subtle.
