The point is to not take itself completely seriously and just realize it's fucking wrestling; oiled men grappling in tights is inherently dumb. There's room for levity.
The problem with treating wrestling as sport is the in-ring will never, ever match up unless you go Japan style. American style whether in WWE or AEW or the indies is fucking awful and is a bad way to present the notion of wrestling as sport. And there are better options now if you want wrestling style presentation and characters mixed with sport, like UFC.
