Contrary to what Meltzer and WWE likes to say WCW wasn't sold because of lack of ratings, it was the number 2 on TV afterall but because the new Jew on AOL/TimeWarner didn't like wrestling and wanted to put no dime canned TV on WCW slot. Also WCW was sold for dimes on the dollar because Vince Mcmahon knew someone at AOL/TimeWarner who cut him an inside deal and if the dotcom bubble hadnt happened shareholders would have sued the fuck out of AOL/TimeWarner.

I haven’t had cable for years now and neither have most of my friends. Literally the only point of cable is to watch sports and wrestling now. Everything else you can watch on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon prime, etc

Makes sense. There's no reason why WCW shouldn't have survived under new ownership or on a different channel. Vince got them for pennies on the the dollar and used the acquisition to become a monopoly.

The ratings from that time look great compared to today's numbers but look at them with context. I don't think it says much about the quality of wrestling at the time but it definitely occupied a larger place in pop culture. Although the business is healthier and stronger than it was 20 years ago it obviously not as popular. I don't think this is just because wrestling got worse in the last two decades but there's far more things to do with your time these days. Not only is wrestling competing with UFC but it's competing against other sports, shows and video games. I think both WWE and AEW are doing well.

That's not how things work. A show gets massively popular then stars demand more money. Then the show dips in ratings and there's less money to pay stars. Even if the dip stays above millions of viewers that drop could be enough for the show to not be able to financially sustain itself.
