Yeah, and none of those fighters Sakuraba beat weighed in fifty pounds heavier than him during his fights like you make it sound. Further, there's no way he'd manage to do that today since the field is significantly more competitive in all aspects of the game. So it's not fair to compare him to fighters that came after who wouldn't even be able to get those fights sanctioned by any athletic commission now.
Also, a shitton of the fights in Japan where rigged, whether Sakuraba was working or not. It was common for management at Pride to pull shit like going to one of the fighters and offering them a huge bonus to not use their wrestling, for example.

Rampage Jackson himself said he was offered a bonus if he let Sakuraba choke him out. He refused, but still went on to lose via tap out because Sakuraba was great, but it puts all his other fights in question. And that's the greater point. Anyone who made their career in Pride, an organization that would rig fights and book mismatches in order to push guys, has an asterisk next to their name. Even for guys like Fedor.

Fuck, if anything it shows they weren't fixed because Rampage refused and nothing happened because of it (and that's ignoring Rampage being a massive bullshitter). Also, fights that were undoubtedly fixed in pretty much everyone's opinion, such as Takada/Coleman are public knowledge so they've obviously done a pretty shit job of covering their shenanigans up.

The Gracie wins are only so so, even at the time. Also, the Shamrock fight was a work and Shamrock was already well past his prime. And Sakuraba did generally benefit from crooked officiating. Like another anon said, though, in terms of influence and style, he's one of the greatest.

I just think Inoki is far more of an icon because he was more than just a wrestler. He was also some fucking crazy politician who bought islands from Fidel Castro, he's also a mainstream celebrity in Japan, and the Big Chin's life just comes across as a real life version of Kiryu Kazuma.
