How do you appeal to "Casual Fans"? I Don't even think they exist anymore. It remind me when Big Studio Executives shit up a Show/Movie franchise to appeal to a "broader audience" when literally 100% of the time it goes to shit

Short matches on weekly TV aside from maybe main event, no choreographed acrobatics, lots of vignettes inside and outside the arena in different locations that progress the storylines throughout the night, show ending in a cliffhanger. Basically write it like episodic TV drama with some wrestling as a backdrop. Quite simple actually. But the wrestling world has gone totally opposite. Oh, and the wrestlers need to look like they could actually fuck you up.

Wrestling was massively over with all ages during the last boom. Guys were watching it in college, and kids were getting detention for doing DX crotch chops. Twenty years is a long time, but not everyone cheering on Stone Cold looks like the Crypt Keeper now.

It would probably be best for the entire business if they just completely ignored the attitude era for the most part. It was a statistical outlier and you can only milk it for so much.

As long as you aren't putting out boring dogshit, young boys will always love wrestling, and as long as you're giving them stars to root for, they'll have a nostalgia hook to keep watching for a while. It was traditionally a repeating cycle but over the last 5-10 years they've completely fucked that cycle. If you're a 12 year old kid, all you know the WWE as is Roman Reigns burying everyone, shitty celebrity matches, and people whose prime was 20 years before you were even born burying everyone.

The AE was one of multiple booms. Over its 100+ year history, wrestling has always been hot, even if it sometimes dipped in a few territories periodically. The statistical anomaly is right now. Wrestling has never been less culturally relevant.

Its weird too because in a way it seems MORE relevant now. Back in the mid 00s wrestling was factually WAY more popular but it was looked at as a niche thing for weirdos.

Now almost every single show from every company is having the tarps come out, but you have NBC, ESPN, and CBS covering it and it doesn't have nearly as much stigma around it.

It's easy: bring back kayfabe. Do everything you can to make wrestling seem like a shoot. This isn't as hard as it sounds. It's not about "fooling" your audience either. It's about making them suspend their disbelief, just as they will do for movies and TV shows, despite knowing it's scripted.

Just because they weren't smarks, that doesn't make them casual fans. Those fans used to buy PPVs regularly and would go to live shows when in town and/or watch wrestling on television. They were just fans, mostly marks to some degree. Not obsessive of course, but not casuals.

I disagree with this. I think current bookers could learn a thing or two about creating interesting TV by going back to rewatch some of that shit. I just rewatched summerslam '99 and that Shane and Test match was better than anything I've seen recently, and back then it was considered a 4 star match.

That's what people here, and even some like Russo, about AEW and other promotions besides WWE. If they stop doing what they're doing and start targeting "casuals", they aren't just going to fail growing their audience because there's no casual interest in wrestling, they will also lose a considerable part of their core audience.
The shows and booking could be better and get even more wrestling fans to watch their shows, but casuals aren't going to watch it
