As a complete casual who just played the video games as a kid, can someone tell me why someone like Vince Russo is so hated, how did it happen? How does the average fan reconcile their love of the attitude era with their hatred of Vince Russo?

Not sure if most people even knew who Russo was during his WWF run in the late 90s. The problems arose when he jumped ship to WCW and became an onscreen figure. He was an obnoxious New Yorker asshole who had no business being on tv much less a wcw world champion. His booking runs in wcw were dreadful and late stage wcw is just god awful and he deserves a ton of blame. Basically without McMahon filtering his ideas (some of which were good but plenty of bad) he was exposed as an obnoxious shitter. Also tons of “everything in wrestling is fake except what you’re seeing right now” smart Mark booking that casuals didn’t care about.

His WCW run, full stop.

In general, Russo's WCW run proved that he's someone who DESPERATELY needs someone to both filter out his good and bad ideas, while at the same time, say no to him when he comes up with something truly retarded.

In WCW, he had no filter or anyone to say "no" to him. He also came in like a huge dick swinging egotist which allowed people who were against him (IE Hogan) to cockblock and sabatoge him left and right. Especially when he hit the skids when you had Golberg and Bret Hart go down with major injuries.

Russo does get credit for the fact that he tries to make sure everyone has something to do and his booking of the undercard/giving a fuck about the undercard and making people care about it. But he's the sort of mad genius type that needs a Vince or a Cornette to counterbalance his brand of crazy plus his ego.

Russo was the right man at the right time. He would have and has failed in every opportunity given to him outside that time frame.

He came along when shock tv like Jerry Springer was big. Mainly because high speed internet wasn't widely available at the time. You could set around watching a 2 hour wrestling show waiting for a nipple slip, or set up and watch cinemax at 2 am in the morning. 56K made it impossible to watch porn.

And then the cussing and all the other stuff just made it perfect for the 90's era anti authoritarian shit.

Immediately after he went to WCW, everything went to shit. His TNA run was even worse.

No one is gonna watch 3 hour episode of Raw to see a bra and panties match when you can see a girl get rammed by a horse in like 10 seconds

Russo was actually viewed favorably up until this point. Russo is not the reason WCW fell or anything, but his run was fucking terrible for a company that was trying to get back and it proved he had no idea what he was doing without Vince. You can also see his TNA run as another example of him not having a clue.

While Cornette is stuck in the 70s-80s, Russo is stuck in the late 90's.

That too. McMahon has the shittiest ideas and his show for the past 20 years has been trash. He needed WWF to be on the ropes before he would have booking over to someone else, to which he would then filter out the bad ideas. Without McMahon, no one could filter out Russos dumb ideas.

But without WWF being in jeopardy of losing money, McMahon would never give up booking

His first and only stint with full creative control which was just three months was not that different from the WWF formula. When he was asked to return in 2000 there was immense pressure to get instant ratings when he knew it would take months of consistent TV so he had to tune up the anti with all the hotshot stuff trying to pop ratings and please the higher ups.
