Look at NXT right now, people with natural charisma didn't need gimmicks, like Bron, Grayson Waller, Carmelo Hayes, Trick Williams. Then you got clear gimmicks like the the daddy's girl, the rednecks, the Irish Psycho, the university, etc. Success on these are all debatable right now, but at least they are memorable.
I remember when Kyle O'Reiley was getting a single's run and holy shit he was a boring motherfucker. He could've used some gimmick to give him a personality. Authors of Pains were the grizzling shits but the gimmick was over at least.
