He had personality and a gimmick before his champ run and they made him drop it all. He's a bit bland but they decided to emphasize his blandness and it buried him.
Right after this he went back to being a goof with the Swagger Soaring Eagle and Bunkhouse Buck as his father and it was fun. He never should have been made champion but he was a decent midcarder.
Faggot Jericho did the same thing when he buried one of the only things Hager had going for him with the We the People chants in AEW.

Continuing to be treated as midcard and never main event despite being a world champion and continuing the gyrating pancake tossing minstrel act despite his chase to the title being about how super serious he was going to be going forward is what killed the reign.
And then in a story where his quest to the title is supposed to be a showcase of his and his team’s sheer endurance, he loses the title in 7 seconds to Brock. and THEN he never gets or cares about a rematch for his former title.

It was never Kofi himself, it was always the piss poor handling of that title reign and everything after.
