Fewer defenses elevates a title. The difference between a reign like Lesnar's (which was honestly fine, all things considered) and Reigns' is that Reigns, from what I've seen, remains a presence on the show despite the few defenses. Being a present champion but only defending it on big shows is a great way to make the belt mean something.
CM Punk was wrestling Big Show, Miz, and Ziggler and doing so at house shows.
It's a stupid looking statistic. The champion is the guy. He's supposed to be the top of the card. The main attraction. Paid more. Treated better. If he's wrestling every other night like the undercard is, he looks like a chump, no matter how ugly the big belt he has around his waist is.
