Even when he was going off script on Punk he sounded completely limp and rambling. Tanahashi saw his potential and Hangman rejecting his mentorship to "figure it out himself" made the difference between a gigadimes long term main eventer and a failed experiment whose continued push will rely on Tony's belief in the sunk cost fallacy.
