John Cena threw away a successful and profitable gimmick that drew people into wrestling and could have been the start of the next attitude era because Jim Ross and Vince McMahon didn't understand the hippity hoppity. He went from being no nonsense and having an original style and a swagger and attitude, where he tore into his opponents on the mic in a new and different way before showing RUTHLESS AGGRESSION in the ring. To throwing his arms around like an inflatable tube man and talking about poopy skidmarks. And his wrestling ability dropped to mimicking that episode of the Simpsons where Homer gets punched by his opponents until they get too tired and then he just knocks them over. Because that's more exciting than actual matches.
All to market and sell colorful clothing to children, who were already getting their parents to buy his merch when he was doing the rapper thing. Literally it was all pointless.
His main purpose as a top face was supposed to get people to cheer for him, but he got boo'd by a majority of the crowd in the majority of arenas he performed in for 10 years. That classifies him as a failure. And it was all a waste because he had the ability to perform at a higher level on all front.
