What's the point of lying?
It was known then and is still seen now as one of the worst crowd reactions to a returning star, especially a former champion in the famed Attitude Era, so why lie?
To further the humiliation?
Almost nobody in the entire crowd had any idea who he was and the ones who did weren't at all enthused, or weren't enough to make any audible sound, there was no "monster pop" as you call it.
