Perhaps the booking with Darby was to establish a father/son theme only to have Sting turn on Darby, this making Sting a heel and establishing a revenge story? Maybe the black group will be the Segway into this. I doubt AEW would use Sting in a group, but go full evil heel which could establish a redemption arch for Sting or a belt push for Darby.

Nah that's too long, you had the Kane unmasking storyline and a main event potential feud with rvd, along with goldberg and the hbk jericho stuff that deserved the belt associated with it. Ideally you could bring sting in at the 2004 royal rumble, have him win it instead of chris benoit and just keep it on him. Pretty sure Rock wanted to job to him at wrestlemania 21, so you could easily swap out triple h batista and book sting rock as the world title match in a much larger stadium.
