Nujapanlets became the big booming new audience for meltzer and are the weirdos who copy whatever he says and buy young bucks tshirts because they were in devitt's group, bullet club, and they only watched njpw in the first place to pretend they knew who he was to be "real fans". My guess is COVID.
I know it's a hack answer but that break they took right after announcing the initial New Japan Cup brackets crippled them.
They came back with half their roster, with no fans, the wrestlers were clearly not trying/saving themselves for when crowds could interact again which still hasn't fully happened.
Then you have the booking of the Cup and the IWGP/IC drama after that.
It's a meme now but unless you were a massive fan it's hard to describe the impact both the EVIL reign and the death of their top two titles had on any interest anyone had.
Even Okada talked about how retarded the decision was and started visibly coasting in matches.
