To be fair, Meltzer hates TNA / Impact. They've had some banger matches and he's only given it one 5 star match in its history. JJ was with them for an unbelievable amount of time in his career.

he only gave out like 4 5-star matches in the 90s when people were actually watching and now that no one watches he gives them out all the time, so the point is that either his definition of "good" wrestling is different then the majority of would be wrestling fans or his standards have changed

His standards haven't changed, Meltz has always been easily impressed by athletic exhibitions which is what wrestlers have to resort to these days because there's very little interest coming in from the outside.
The only fans left are the diehards who know him by name so as a business move the performers tailor their performances around them, so you see a lot of stuff that is fully intended as Meltzbait.
They've probably lowered a bit though because ultimately more 5 star matches = more discussion = more paypiggy subs.

No, 90s jap shit was more like a shoot.
They were known being a bunch of stiff retards who'd hit you without holding back. It's why that forearm fighting sprit spot makes zero sense when you see it done in AEW matches. In Japan, they're chopping the shit out of each other for real and the entire match is stiff. Whereas in AEW the matches have mixed psychology where they try to mix indie shit with jap shit and the end result is an incoherent match.

It's why Vader was more popular in Japan than he was in the USA, because he was too stiff. Even though he had the perfect heel look & moveset which would've translated well in the USA. I think he was most known in the USA for that Boy Meets World episode.
