Sure, as a kid watching Justice League the Animated Series, I wanted to be Green Lantern because he was the only black dude of note, but I still projected on, Stone Cold, Malcom from Malcom in the Middle, and Supes from Louis and Clark and many other white characters that I thought were awesome.
I would get it if small kids wanted to see people similar to them on TV, but they don't. A boy in a wheelchair would get a kick out of a cool character in a wheelchair like Mr. Xavier, but he would still get a kick out of Wolverine, even though Wolverine is never ever going to be rolled around, ever. They only care if a character is cool or not. I don't get why grown ups do this though. It's bizarre. /blogpost
