There's literally a PPV in Punk's hometown tonight. He's the company's biggest draw ever, and they're not that far away from their most important contract renegotiation ever, and with a company that's engaging in some legendary costcutting measures.

The answer is because this is how they set up the promo with Phil's trainer and whoever booked it either has a severe lack of psychology sense or at least a momentary lapse in reason, or perhaps just doesn't care.

But it's quite funny if you think about AEW compared to WWE in terms of what you have to do to get in the main event world title match of the biggest show of the year

>2+ months before the show
>be chosen as one of the top 30 contenders
>win the 30 man match
>many times the winner is in the ring for over 30 or even 60 minutes

>AEW
>half a week before the show
>all you have to do is a sign a contract open to literally anyone on the roster
>not only does the entire roster not rush to the ring, but no one does except for Ace Steele
