He started to change after he became a new Japan heavyweight and started working like the Bucks crossed with Okada and that's what he does now. It's not what got him over, it's what got him over with Meltzer.
The new Japan bump was due to edrones wanting to pretend they are real fans who knew who the former iwgp champions are. Starting with Devitt signing to WWE, the nujapanlets started spawning into existence. Then when AJ came in, celebrated as "he's a former iwgp champion, Cole", the even bigger wdrone audience checked over and the new top white guy was Omega. That's why he had so much hype.
