Abdullah the Butcher did it too. I think the old school guys didn't give a fuck and would gig themselves (and each other) in any direction, it wasn't until 80s they all seemed to go side to side. Nearly all of the older guys who were doing hardcore stuff in the 70s have those vertical scars bad.
