Storyline-wise, Dexter found Austin Theory to be annoying as fuck and only tolerated Johnny for Indi's sake.

Also, Hunter probably knows that if he puts Dexter with either men as a bodyguard, that he'd quickly become more popular than them. Especially Gargano, as the only reason they were paired with Dexter on NXT was to use Dexter to make normies like Johnny

That's the point though.

Sam did the same gimmick 100% straight and it got him branded "worst wrestler of the 10s by Meltzer. When he came to NXT, he was asked to become a good guy and he reinvented his gimmick to be heroic one and got over big time doing it.

Hunter's trying to add some teeth back to Sam's gimmick but he needs someone to bounce off of ally-wise and Gargano was perfect in that.
