They literally did the same fucking shit with Austin in 2001 with Cena in 2005, they had the match everyone thought he was going to lose and they built it up as a no-win scenario for him, people thought he would lose and maybe get a change in character. It didn't happen, he buried both of them and fans knew his comeuppance would never come and they stopped giving a shit about the product.

Except they didn't and they still care today and this was one of the most unique dynamics wrestling ever had that they played with and could do good feuds with since the midcarder / shitters he went up against got great reactions when they worked with Cena and the crowd was always hot and nothing ever backfired because they knew what the reaction would be. I still remember going to shows around 2012-2016 and Let's Go Cena Cena Sucks were the biggest chants and people did them inbetween almost every match.
