WWE sets the standard for the industry, and they turned it into a ridiculous parody of itself (for something that's pretty ridiculous to start with).
The same kind of self-aware ironic attitude that ruined a lot of millenials (we call them redditors around here) was poison for something as already-ridiculous as wrestling.
The wrestlers are all marks and make no attempt to suspend disbelief, so the who thing is impossible to enjoy unironically.
Whatever your opinion of MJF might be, his attempt to maintain kayfabe and suspend belief is a step forward.
