Triple H had surpassed Shawn as a star. Not as a worker but as a star and in Vince's pecking order. Shawn didn't want to come back until 2002 when he got his shit together after Nash had a convo with him, told him he needed to quit that shit or else his son wouldn't have a dad anymore.

What he means is Triple H had the privilege of working with the two biggest draws in wrestling history while Shawn's back was broken. So Triple H's main events back in 1999 and 2000 drew more than any of Shawn's main events. But Shawn is still the bigger draw on average and in current day.

Essentially this. Although the dirty little secret that WWE tries to bury is that Shawn was never a draw. Go back and look at when he was on top. Shawn was never a draw. Neither was HHH, but he worked with some of the biggest draws of all time during one of the hottest periods in wrestling.

Shawn had the misfortune of having to up against the NWO. He was always an OK draw, not Austin/Rock/Hogan or even Cena but he was performing better as a draw than Bret/Undertaker.

HHH forced himself into the main event for 20 years so he has the numbers but Shawn always got the bigger crowd reaction and ultimatley has the most influence.
There is no wrestler today who wants to be the next HHH.
