It doesn't matter of any future decision in 1997 because Hogan, Nash, and Hall signed such massive contracts it would be impossible to make a profit. Hogan's contract guaranteed that he got something like 25% of all ppv profits.

Sting beats Hogan clean
Release Hogan/Hall/Nash and all of the other old guys that were paid way too much money
Use the money to sign Triple H and Shawn Michaels, both had another decade left on top
Rebuild the company around the young talent with Sting and Goldberg as the figureheads.
Vince literally did this addition by subtraction shit with wwe and won the wars.

Push younger talent and have them go over the older guys. Don't try to compete with WWF on mature stuff as Turner fucked Based Bischoff with standards and practices. Strap a rocket to Jericho and don't let him leave. Continue Goldbergs streak and keep him face. Dismantle the NWO in one final PPV say Starcade '98 and have the core group return only to have them ostracize Hogan. The new leader of the NWO would be Jericho while Hogan leaves again, whole getting paid, to return as Hulkster which by 1999 would be a major nostalgia trip. Your build would be Jericho versus Goldberg to Starcade '99 with Jericho going over. Ideally Goldberg trains harder and gets more moves under his belt. With heel Jericho leading the NWO you have the Outsiders gain the tag titles and Jericho with the big gold belt. Also, I'd have Hall win the TV Title just to have more gold on the new NWO. Hogan enters a classic face/heel program with Jericho that has insane TV segments due to booths ability to own a microphone and work crowds. At this point by Starcade 2000 (Y2Cade) you have already had Hall lose the TV Title to a young face with substantial work rate, let's say Kanyon, at World War 3 PPV, and ideally you've rocketed a mid_card tag team up the card to defeat the Outsiders and of course Hogan versus Jericho at Y2Cade. The obvious angle is will the Outsiders be helping their old pal Hogan or backing Jericho.

At Y2Cade you have the Outsiders lose their titles and they walk out during Hogan and Jericho. During the main event you have 2 masked men run through the crowd after a scrum between Hogan and the outsiders has security haul them away. The masked Men are revealed to be Gaitch and HBK. They've left WWF bc WCW isn't completely dead yet and they drop Hogan giving Jericho the win. After a short celebray they knock Jericho out. Have Gaitch give a short promo and fade to black with Tony yelling WTH JUST HAPPENED. Now WCW 2001 looks totally different and they survive.

While these main plot line sare occuring other stars are moving up and down the card creating mini feuds and other story lines. These are just the highlights while other teams are being set for post 2000 WCW. Gaitch and HBK would've been mega gets at 2000 for WCW and a star power vacuum would've been created with their departure.

sell the fed to David Crockett or give it to him if he can't afford it. That way the fed is in the hands of someone who values its worth rather than some TV company that doesnt. Grease some palms to preserve the good relationship with TBS but dont let them control the thing. No corporate merger, no end of WCW.
As for booking decisions: Flair should have beat Hogan clean at least once, he was way more over with WCW audiences. No fingerpoke of doom obviously, no running the NWO into the ground, but maybe bring in the BWO from ECW to feud with them. Never hire vince russo, never do an anything on a pole match, no david arquette shit. Partner with XPW to do a hardcore division and get rid of paul heyman sooner. Also make better use of Mike Awesome. Oh, and no wrestlers get creative control at all. Not via contracts, not via the booking committee, nor by any other means. Finally, hire someone to kill kevin sullivan and thus save Chris Benoit and his family.

As other anons have said, strap the rocket to Jericho and keep the cruiserweight division intact. Do whatever you can to convince Angle to sign with you instead of the fed. Keep Goldberg's streak going for a year plus, and let Angle break the streak at 1999 Great American Bash if you can get him.
