He literally reinvented himself to the main event when he became a serious heel and had the feud with Shawn, eventually involving the heavyweight title on RAW and he had a great run with it. It was the best feud of the year they did it.

If you want to put that on anyone, that's Cody because he was AEW's number one guy in regards to cross-market promotion, but no, it's not on any wrestler. It's just on Tony for being a money mark with pockets deeper than the Mariana Trench willing to overpay for absolutely anyone.

And without that, it never happens. Anyone within reason could carry the show, if they decided to run Omega as their ace in the first couple years, he'd have been the guy that "legitimized" AEW. The reality is it always had a pretty static floor/ceiling due to existing tangential to WWE's own viewership and you could put anyone within reason in that spot. Cody and Jericho are the on-screen names that legitimized it but it all comes down to just finding a guy willing to invest in the venture.
