Smokey Mountain had way better talent and storylines, plus built people up and stuff, ECW was willing to exploit trends and arrived when wrestling started getting hot again so they could piggyback off that and had more mainstream success but the product wasn't nearly as good for the most part. If SMW was run during a different period it would be more successful whereas the opposite is true for ECW. In hindsight both offer entertainment.

Heyman hands down for the sole reason that he knew and was honest about the whole exploitation and grifting behind Professional Wrestling while Cornette still believes that whatever he is doing is somehow a gift to everyone else that doesn’t know any better. SMW had some cool angles but was overall a mediocre show that had no place in the era it was taking place in, Cornette admits that, though he admits that after it had failed so it's most likely just cope. People who fawn over it are weird, it's a moderately well booked wrestling show that would've been fine in the 70s or 80s, even then most wrestling tv was the shits since it was all about live gates which SMW also didn't draw for shit.

Cornette loves to spin tails into his own favour, it's why he simultaneously saved roh from a business perspective and was responsible for pushing a bunch of guys some of them reluctantly but also never held any power there and was never an influence on the booking even though the guys who were cornette favs were all of a sudden holding all the belts for years before they decided to put the belts on people who weren't absolute no dimes faggots like the move spamming clones he liked because they looked like "athletes".

Cornette with OVW. You can't really argue against the Cena/Orton/Brock/Batista legacy. If Cornette wasn't responsible for educating those four then we wouldn't have professional wrestling on TV. I'm actually watching SMW and ECW alongside each other(I'm up to 93 in SMW, 94 in ECW) and it's been interesting observing the differences and similarities between them.

Once Paul really takes control of ECW in late 93 you start to see how he really shines in his presentation and his ability to take hold of the zeitgeist. The production is really unique and raw and everything has this late night MTV feel to it. I mean imagine you're a late teens/early twenty something idiot flipping channels and you see ECW with a Metallica music video montage of Mike Awesome powerbombing dudes, and then you turn it to WWF and see Doink the Clown fighting the Mantaur. It's obvious which you're going to choose. The Public Enemy skits are legitimately funny in a late night stoner way and waaay better than any humor you'd see in any other wrestling show. Even though the wrestling and booking itself is the same old hokey Southern shit (run-ins galore, Dusty finishes, etc) the presentation is pretty amazing and compelling and still has a fun rawness to it.

Contrast that with SMW. Some god awful production and the show looks cheap as fuck. It's very, "My sister's son does some stuff with cameras, we should get him to film this." But it's interesting to see how they could have almost been ahead of ECW in some respects. They had a partnership with W*ING before ECW did, and I just got through watching the episode with Kevin Sullivan and WING Kanemura. It's an amazing bloody fight and the crowd is literally shrieking in terror while Kevin is beating the shit out of this guy. It was amazing. If they had any mind for what was going on, they would have had some kind of deathmatch on TV or at the next big event. Not saying that SMW should have turned into some kind of hardcore promotion, but they clearly had people who were aware that an edgier product was catching on, but instead decided to continue being a down home wrasslin' show for the kids and meemaws.

SMW did have some great heels though. Kevin Sullivan is way more deranged in SMW and the Dirty White Boy is excellent. It would have been great to see Dirty White Boy in ECW.

Does anyone know if the two promotions were beefing? I've seen Paulie and Joey take pot shots at SMW on commentary. In an ideal world they would have worked together side by side.

Would highly recommend anyone check out watching these two shows. While both promotions have their highs and lows, they were both offering a unique product and were vehemently against putting out anything that looked or felt like WWF/WCW.

SMW never had any desire than to run Appalachia but was the first smark favorite promotion that people flew into the middle of no where to see, and bought video tapes of.

ECW lost their national tv deal, and despite having PPV and national video distribution couldn’t even afford to pay its own employees. And in some cases had their employees paying to work there.

But it doesn’t end there because Corny got another bite of the apple with OVW which’s again was a huge hit locally and went on to provide develop all the stars of the ruthless aggression era including the goat John Cena.

Mike Awesome was in early ECW. In fact one of ECWs first home video releases Awesome has far and away the best match compared to guys like Rocken Rebel and Tommy Cairo.

Unfortunately cause Heyman is a bad Booker they included a clip of awesome eating shit off the top rope after the match assuring he also looked bad to the home video viewing audience.

cornette was the clearly the better trainer and had the better mind for the business in terms of actually taking care of his guys and making sure they became smarter about the business and how to conduct themselves

heyman had some really compelling shit but in hindsight there was no longevity to a lot of his thought process, and a lot of guys suffered because of him either financially or physically

SMW was great due to the fact it produced talent and people went on to have great careers

ECW didn't have that great talent they had a couple guys Mick Foley RVD to name a couple off bat but it mostly was dudes willing to get their brains beat with a chair for 20 minutes but what ECW gave us was Infamous/Legendary events such as Mass Transit Incident the crucifixion of tommy dreamer that turned Kurt Angle away from ECW and the Chair in the ring incident and I don't remember if the Vic Grimes thing was ECW or not

SMW was kicked off a bunch of TV stations due to how bloody the WING Kanemura angle was, they'd have been dead in the water if they tried to go more violent than that
